Narrative

JOSHUA STURGILL remained at home to take care of his mother and young sisters after the death of his father in 1846. After his mother died in 1855 he apparently continued to live alone in the comfortable log house his father had built in 1841.

It is family tradition that he first saw his future bride when she was still a baby and was so smitten by her beauty that he said he would wait for her to grow up and then marry her, and he did. At the age of forty nine he brought home his sixteen year old bride, Phoebe Marilda Weaver. All of their children were born in the same log house his father had built. This house, still in good condition, was occupied continuously until 1980. Joshua and Phoebe are buried in the Zion Hill cemetery on Helton Creek in Ashe County, NC.
