JOHN STOGDIL-STODGILL was probably born in Essex Co. about 1665. His wife was named Ann and several records indicate that she was a sister of Henry, Ambrose, and John Madison. He was living on the Piscataway creek farm in 1718 and it is assumed that he lived out his life there and died about 1732. As John was the only person in the area with the surname Stogell or similar spelling several records support the conclusion that those listed were his children. - pg 29.
NOTE: Several variations in the spelling of the name came into the family in the third generation. In many cases the same person spelled the name differently in different records but this was probably the error of the person who entered the record.
